Dr Tahir Sultan Shamsi is a medical graduate from Dow Medical College, Karachi in 1988. He completed Hifz of Holy Quran when he was 8 years old. He got his postgraduate studies from UK, and was awarded Membership in 1994 and Fellowship of Royal College of Pathologists in the field of hematology in the year 2001. Dr Shamsi, returned back to Pakistan, with the aim of introducing treatment for blood diseases and bone marrow transplantation in his country.

Biography

Dr Tahir Sultan Shamsi is a medical graduate from Dow Medical College, Karachi in 1988. He completed Hifz of Holy Quran when he was 8 years old. He got his postgraduate studies from UK, and was awarded Membership in 1994 and Fellowship of Royal College of Pathologists in the field of hematology in the year 2001. Dr Shamsi, returned back to Pakistan, with the aim of introducing treatment for blood diseases and bone marrow transplantation in his country.

Tahir Sultan Shamsi is the pioneer of bone marrow transplantation in Pakistan. In September 1995, he performed the first ever bone marrow transplantation on a 19 years young boy suffering from blood cancer. Since then, he has carried out over 500 transplantations successfully at the National Institute of Blood Diseases & Bone Marrow Transplantation (NIBD).

Dr Shamsi’s endeavor of starting bone marrow transplantation in the country has greatly helped saving millions of dollars of foreign exchange to the country. Previously hundreds of patients used to go abroad for bone marrow transplantation.

For poor patients, Dr Shamsi managed to get philanthropic support from the community-atlarge and government so that no patient is denied of treatment because of lack of resources. He has been instrumental to establish bone marrow transplant facilities in public sector in Punjab (Children Hospital, Lahore), Federal Capital Islamabad and Private sector in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtoon-khwah.

Government of Punjab has nominated as convener / consultant for BMT program at the Children Hospital Lahore. He is establishing Punjab Institute of Blood Diseases & Bone Marrow Transplantation in Lahore through Government of Punjab Funding.

He has been the main driving force to establish clinical hematology specialty in the country. He established NIBD in 2008 as a non-governmental, single specialty tertiary care teaching and research based hospital for blood disorders and bone marrow transplantation which is taking care of over 40,000 blood diseases patients from across the country.

Dr Shamsi has been working on the gene mapping of the inherited blood diseases in the Pakistani population since last 8 years to prevent these diseases in Pakistani population. He has established the carrier screening tests, genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis for over 200 diseases at NIBD for inherited diseases like thalassemia, hemophilia, von Willibald disease, factor VII, factor I, factor XIII, Glanzman thrombasthenia, osteoporosis, Duchene muscular dystrophy, Down’s syndrome and numerous metabolic disorders to control affected births in our population. This research work has been presented and published in international peer reviewed journals with high impact factor.

Dr. Shamsi has supervised training over 30 hematologists and 12 bone marrow transplant physicians in the country. Dr. Shamsi has published 83 research articles in high-ranking national and international scientific journals like the Lancet, Hemophilia and others with cumulative Impact factor of more than 150. He is the author of 6 books.
